It is the development of “Ghost Train” (2021), inspired by the sculpture’s ability to accommodate people, which constructs a space from the inside, allowing people to dialogue in the space, and shaping the space’s condition due to the characteristics of the material (tinfoil forms a stuffy and airless condition; the sculpture hangs in mid-air and slightly shakes every second, and people inside the car gradually get seasick).
Camping is very popular in recent years, we can get away from the city, away from the crowd, set up a tent in the public space to build a small private space, to get an interesting sense of security.
I’ve forgotten whether my first camping trip was on grass or concrete, but this time I want to set up a camp in outer space, a camp of my own making.
The work “Camping” is a record of my group of five friends. Two years ago, we went camping in Pak Lap, Sai Kung, and we had a great time, talked about everything and had a very memorable night. Now that the group of friends have separated and left Hong Kong, only one of us and I are left, this camp which can accommodate five people is a commemorative moment.
The “camp” is an outer space tent made of snack bags, instant noodle bags and aluminium foil bags collected from friends, family and social media in Hong Kong.
The reason for choosing snack bags and instant noodles as sculpture materials is that snacking on crisps can be done during gatherings, camping trips, happy and relaxing moments, as well as sad moments, snacks are not a staple food, and they are not necessary for three meals a day, so when choosing to eat snacks, they are often accompanied by desires and emotions.
The reason why we only collect materials from Hong Kong is because of the flavour that Hong Kong possesses. Flavour is irreplaceable and unique, and it is one of the most universal languages in the world, and it embraces culture, memory, and time, so when we eat home-cooked food cooked by our family members from any corner of the world, we will always remember and think of our home place.
People in Hong Kong who are far away from home are always homesick. Eating a packet of heatwave or a ding dong before going out, it is as if we are back in Hong Kong like a shift in time.
The outside of the tent is a shiny tinfoil surface, a little bit of light is enough to refract countless lines of light, the inside is made of bamboo gabions to tie up a dome, the floor is covered with soft blankets, five memory foam cushions and a campfire hanging from the ground. Inside the camp, people can relax by looking at the “campfire”, talking about the world, or even lying on the felt and staring at the sky, hoping that this space will make people temporarily leave the cold reality of the world, and bring them a little warmth, so that they will not feel scared and lonely in this space.
